The purpose of Child Protection Services is to provide 24-hour assistance in investigating allegations of child abuse and neglect. Caseworkers from one of eight paired teams respond to reports of possible child abuse or neglect. Referrals can be made by law enforcement, schools, medical professionals, or anyone who feels there is a situation that warrants investigation.


This Child Welfare Social Worker position is designated for persons with general social work qualifications who have no prior child welfare experience. This position is considered an under fill for the Child Welfare Social Worker II position. Incumbents serve a nine-month probationary period and participate in the Child Welfare Academy in order to learn child welfare practices and standards and complete Child Welfare Academy assignments. These positions require incumbents to work effectively with individuals and families under stress, difficult circumstances and from diverse backgrounds.


During the nine-month probationary period, incumbents will work under the guidance of child welfare supervisors or designated experienced child welfare social workers to gain knowledge and expertise necessary to provide professional child welfare social work services to children and families who are subjects of child abuse or neglect.

  • Direct experience is not required.
  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in a human behavioral sciences field. Examples of degree titles include Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Human Development/Family Studies.
  • In order to meet the minimum educational requirements of a human behavioral science degree, the applicant must have a degree with major course work (equivalent to 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours) in either development of human behavior, child development, family intervention techniques, diagnostic measures or therapeutic techniques such as social work, psychology, sociology, guidance and counseling, and child development.
  • Maintain continuing education hours annually, and comply with state training requirements.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and background check. As marijuana is an illegal substance under federal law, testing positive for marijuana (medical or otherwise) or any other substance for which the county tests, will result in the contingent offer of employment being revoked. A successful completion of the drug screen is defined as obtaining a negative result.
