Performs a variety of complex law enforcement tasks and provides supervisory assistance for the assigned shift. Acts in the absence of first-line supervisor by providing supervision of staff and assuring operations tasks as completed. Provides highly responsible line assistance to assigned supervisor.

  • Receives general Supervisor or direction from a sergeant or higher-level Supervisor.
  • Exercises indirect and direct supervision over deputies, reserve deputies, civilian employees, volunteers, and inmates as needed.
  • When the sergeant is not on duty, serves in the capacity of first-line Supervisor and assumes the responsibility for the supervision of his/her work group. Provides direct supervision to all assigned officers and direction to other employees, as necessary, throughout the facility; schedules shift personnel; reviews and approves reports; and takes charge of difficult and complex situations.
  • Serves as a lead worker for other employees; answers technical questions regarding operational issues; answers questions regarding other areas as delegated by a Supervisor.
  • Provides input to the Sergeant regarding training needs and performance of lower level personnel.
  • Prepares and reviews documentation of shift activity, reports of unusual incidents observed or emergency situations encountered, or other documentation required as a part of assigned duties.
  • Completes and maintains records, logs, and reports.
  • Conducts criminal investigations and participates in hearings and court cases as assigned; assists officers in preparing reports in cases for trial and may personally appear in court to present evidence and testimony; reviews and approves reports submitted by officers.
  • Analyzes and synthesizes a variety of data concerning agency activities; prepares reports and statistics.
  • Performs duties as Field Training Officer.
  • Provides information to citizens and/or other criminal justice system employees on rules and regulations of the Larimer County Sheriff's Office; preserves good relationships with the general public.
  • Assists in the investigation of complaints against platoon members and reports findings.
  • Performs all line officer duties as a Larimer County officer within assigned area.
  • Performs other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.


Corporal - Booking

  • Supervises and assumes responsibility for jail booking and release activities.
  • Maintains computerized booking systems, including fingerprint and photo imaging systems.
  • Conducts visual and audio surveillance of inmates for extended periods of time.
  • Reads and interprets legal and non-legal documents, including the processing of such documents as medical instructions, commitment orders, summons, and other legal writs and court documents for other staff assigned to the Booking Room.
  • Maintains contact with other law enforcement agencies and various courts (i.e., municipal, county, district, federal) to ensure appropriate compliance with judicial orders.
  • Processes and releases inmates, including taking booking photographs and obtaining a serviceable set of fingerprint impressions.
  • Monitors and signs-off on ALL booking release documents. Approves the release of inmates.
  • Performs crisis intervention functions to include inmate and staff counseling, suicide prevention, recognition of abnormal behavior, and implementation of appropriate intervention action.
  • Performs searches of people and objects capable of concealing contraband.
  • Puts on and operates a self-contained breathing apparatus and extinguishes small fires by using a fire extinguisher or other appropriate means.
  • Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters.
  • Assists officers in preparing reports in cases for trial and may personally appear in court to present evidence and testimony; reviews reports submitted by officers.
  • Analyzes and synthesizes a variety of data concerning Jail activities; prepares reports and statistics.
  • Monitors and reports to the Booking Sergeant issues and trends related to inmate population.
  • Serves as Assistant Jail Supervisor at off-site facilities for mass arrest functions.
  • Maintains and reports problems with all booking equipment; trains staff in the proper use of the equipment, make recommendations on purchase of new equipment as needed. Resolves any maintenance concerns.
  • Maintains post orders and supplies for the Booking Room.
  • Assists the transportation unit Supervisor in the transportation of inmates as required by staffing levels and transportation needs.
  • Conducts criminal investigations within the Jail, as assigned.

Corporal - Jail Logistics

  • Facilitates inmate classification.
  • Reviews criminal history on all incarcerated inmates and disseminates pertinent information to administration, Supervisors, and staff.
  • Responds to the most difficult complaints and requests for information concerning classification decisions.
  • Completes background investigations on eligible applicants.
  • Coordinates projects with Jail Logistics Lieutenant..

 Corporal - Inmate Labor Coordinator

  • Manages and supervises inmate workers assigned to clean and maintain the Larimer County Jail; plans, schedules, assigns, delegates, monitors, and evaluates work of inmate labor staff; participates in the selection of inmate workers; trains inmate workers and provides remedial training as needed.
  • Implements policies and procedures developed to meet goals and objectives of the maintenance section.
  • Takes action to remove inmates from worker status as appropriate, when needed; handles complaints from inmates to ensure they are effectively resolved in a timely manner.
  • Develops and implements a daily cleaning and sanitation program for all areas of the Jail, including administrative, support, and inmate living areas.
  • Directs and advises inmate work groups in proper methods of care and cleaning of Jail.
  • Ensures security of the Jail is maintained.
  • Maintains necessary supplies for cleaning, inmate apparel and hygiene, and janitorial work.
  • Operates tools and equipment such as vacuums, buffers, etc.
  • Follows safety measures applicable to work assignment, as well as general Jail safety precautions and practices.
  • Directs and monitors grounds maintenance performed by inmate labor.
  • Maintains records of janitorial expenses.
  • Orders janitorial supplies and inmate supplies; receives and picks up supplies.
  • Participates in inmate disciplinary hearings.
  • Administers first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation in emergency situations.
  • Maintains Material Safety Data Sheets for all cleaning agents used within the jail.
  • Provides direct and indirect supervision through subordinate Supervisors of all positions, employees, and functions within the Jail; provides broad direction, oversees policy and procedure standards, and evaluates performance of Supervisors, direct reports, and operations; conducts second-level review of performance evaluation; resolves pervasive and complex personnel problems.
  • Conducts visual and audio surveillance of inmates on work details.
  • Performs clothed and unclothed searches of inmate workers.
  • Participates in inmate disciplinary hearings; may have to endure verbal and mental abuse when confronted with the hostile views and opinions of inmates.
  • Performs the inventory function for all inmate clothing, bedding, hygiene items, and facility cleaning supplies.
  • Performs routine cleaning of sensitive areas within the facility.
  • Transports and escorts inmate workers to jobs sites away from the jail.
  • Conducts background investigations and prepares subsequent reports on candidates for employment.
  • Serves as a member of the Inmate Disciplinary Hearing Board.
  • Counts, collects, and inventories small items.
  • Effectively restrains inmates, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints; subdues resisting inmates by using maneuvers and /or resorting to the use of hands and feet and other approved devices in self-defense.
  • Receives and picks up supplies.
  • Performs routine cleaning of the facility when the inmate labor force is not adequate to perform these duties.
  • Assists with the needs of security and transportation during emergencies or as directed.

Corporal – Court Services

  • Assists sergeant with administrative duties within Transportation unit; reviews court docket and related documents; coordinates transports between jurisdictions and special or complex transport situations; enters and reviews data within computer system; handles special requests from courts, District Attorney and the like.
  • Performs all transportation officer duties as a Larimer County officer within assigned area.


  • Two years of full-time experience as a sworn law enforcement officer or jail deputy, with at least one year of experience as a Jail Deputy with the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.
  • High school diploma or GED, supplemented by specialized training in corrections, or a related field.
  • Larimer County Sheriff's Office 52-hour firearms course preferred.
  • Possession of a valid Colorado driver's license.
  • Current first aid and community CPR certificates.
  • "First/Second Line Jail Supervisor's Training" Course Certificate.
  • Firearms qualified in accordance with Sheriff's Office Policy
  • Currently certified as a peace officer in the State of Colorado.
