Details

Directs field and office operations for an assigned unit. Performs a variety of specific unit and administrative duties.

  • Receives general supervision from higher level sworn personnel.
  • Exercises direct and indirect supervision over other assigned sworn and non-sworn personnel.
  • Assigns, directs, and supervises activities of assigned staff, ensuring adherence to established policies, procedures, and standards; administers or makes recommendations for routine personnel matters affecting subordinates, including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, assigning work, scheduling work hours, granting leave, appraising performance, disciplining, and submitting such records and reports as required by County policies and procedures.
  • Assists officers in preparing reports in cases for trial and may personally appear in court to present evidence and testimony; reviews reports submitted by officers.
  • Analyzes and synthesizes a variety of data concerning Divisional activities; prepare reports and statistics.
  • Establishes and maintains lines of communication with internal and external elements of the Jail Division and keeps management appraised as to matters of significance.
  • Performs the duties of Field Training Officer (FTO).
  • Reads and comprehends legal and non-legal documents, including the processing of such documents as medical instructions, commitment orders, summons, and other legal writs and court documents.
  • Maintains discipline and ensures that agency rules and policies are followed.
  • Evaluates training needs of subordinates; researches and designs training programs; conducts in-service training; maintains related records and reports.
  • Prepares and reviews reports of shift activity.
  • Exercises direct, first-level supervision of positions, employees, operations, and activities within the assigned unit; may include coordinating staff training, assigning and reviewing work, participating in the interview and selection process, making recommendations impacting pay, status, and disciplinary action, evaluating performance independently or in conjunction with a higher-level supervisor/manager, and approving time off.
  • Testifies and presents evidence in court.
  • Confers with prosecutors and maintains contact with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Assists in budget preparation and administration.
  • Performs other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.

SERGEANT - BOOKING

  • Supervises and assumes responsibility for jail booking and release.
  • Provides information and directions, mediates disputes, and advises inmates of rights and processes.
  • Conducts visual and audio surveillance of inmates.
  • Processes and releases inmates, including taking their photographs and obtaining a serviceable set of fingerprint impressions.
  • Performs crisis intervention functions including inmate and staff counseling, suicide prevention, recognition of abnormal behavior, and implementation of appropriate intervention action.
  • Performs searches of people and objects capable of concealing contraband.
  • Counts, collects, and inventories small items.
  • Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters.
  • Assumes responsibility for the fiscal control of expenditures within area of control.
  • Confers with local, State, and Federal agencies and courts to maintain a positive line of communication and a cooperative atmosphere between the agencies.
  • Serves as Jail Supervisor at off-site facilities for mass arrest functions.
  • Maintains, reports, and resolves problems with all booking equipment; makes recommendations on purchase of new equipment as needed.
  • Communicates booking and movement officer performance issues to platoon sergeants.
  • Assists the transportation unit supervisor in the transportation of inmates as required by staffing levels and transportation needs.
  • Performs special studies and projects as assigned and required.

SERGEANT - JAIL ADMINISTRATION
This is a three-year rotational job function within the Larimer County Jail.

  • Participates in all normal jail activities, including enforcing jail procedures and laws, monitoring inmate and officer activities, and conducting escorts.
  • Develops a thorough understanding and familiarity with the fire, safety, and disaster response plans for the Larimer County Jail and ensures compliance therewith.
  • Ensures that the Larimer County Jail Fire Safety Plans are in accordance with regulations set forth by the Poudre Valley Fire Authority and the American Correctional Association.
  • Facilitates semi-annual fire inspections conducted by the Poudre Valley Fire Authority.
  • Facilitates annual inspections by the County Health Department and the Larimer County Risk Management staff.
  • Conducts, at least quarterly, a Fire and Evacuation Drill for the Larimer County Jail and record the results of all such drills.
  • Retrieves and provides documentation to the ACA Coordinator dealing with the Discipline, Fire, Safety and Sanitation standards set forth in the ACA Standards for Jails.
  • Conducts a facility wide fire, safety and sanitation inspection at least once a week; conducts an inspection of fire equipment at least once a week and maintains documents of this inspection on file; ensures that there is clear access to fire extinguishers, fire control panels and fire exits are maintained at all times.
  • Conducts training for staff pertaining to policies and procedures on control of fire ignition and fire fuel sources, location and use of fire detection equipment, procedures for responding to fire emergencies, use of portable fire extinguishers, use of contained breathing apparatus and elements of facility evacuation.
  • Maintains Material Safety Data Sheets on corrosive, flammable, and toxic materials.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Ensures that proper procedures are in place and complied with pertaining to the disposal of hazardous waste produced by the Larimer County Jail.
  • Reviews and signs off on sanction hearings to ensure due process has been met.
  • Reviews and responds to sanction hearing appeals.
  • Performs crisis intervention functions including inmate and staff counseling, suicide prevention, recognition of abnormal behavior, and implementation of appropriate intervention action.
  • Serves as Jail Supervisor at off-site facilities for mass arrest functions.
  • Provides information to citizens regarding general legal procedures as necessary.
  • Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the jail.
  • Performs special studies and projects as assigned and required.
  • Maintains records and coordinates the use of the jail  pool vehicle.
  • Coordinates with Fleet Services for pool vehicle servicing.
  • Evaluates training goals, objectives, and priorities and provides input concerning implementation of various training programs.
  • Helps to identify training needs for jail personnel.
  • Develops and coordinates training academies and mini-academies as required.
  • Maintains agency media library and training aids; reviews training aids and selects appropriate additions to ensure library is current and complete.

SERGEANT - COURT SERVICES

  • Supervises and assumes responsibility for transportation and security activities within the Larimer County Justice Centers; makes decisions in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Participates in all normal transportation and security activities, including enforcing Justice Center procedures and laws, and monitoring inmate and officer activities, and providing courtroom security.
  • Performs and oversees administrative duties within Justice Center unit; ensures outsourced security contract is followed; coordinates special activities with tenants; resolves security issues.
  • Provides information and directions, mediate disputes, and advise inmates of rights and processes.
  • Serves as Jail Supervisor at off-site facilities for mass arrest functions.
  • Supervises and personally participates in Justice Center investigations, including the gathering of evidence, questioning of witnesses, and apprehension of suspects.
  • Provides information to citizens regarding general legal procedures as necessary.
  • Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the Justice Center.
  • Performs special studies and projects as assigned and required.

Qualifications:

  • Four years of full-time experience as a sworn law enforment officer with at least. two years of experience as a Corporal or Investiagtor in the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.
  • High school diploma or GED, supplemented by specialized training in administration of justice, police science, public administration, or a related field. Must have the equivalent of 60 college semester hours.
  • Currently certified as a peace officer in the State of Colorado.
  • Current Firearms Qualification.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR and First Aid certifications by date of hire.
