The Larimer County Community Development Division is looking for a skilled and experienced individual to join our team as a Plans Examiner. The Plans Examiner reviews all construction plans for commercial, industrial, and residential building projects to determine structural integrity and compliance with applicable code and permit requirements. This role responds to public inquiries regarding plans or code requirements, and performs field inspection work as assigned. The Plans Examiner also conducts pre-submittal meetings with builders, engineers, contractors, and architects concerning building code and permit requirements.
Additionally, the Plans Examiner:
Reviews structural calculations, fire resistive requirements, and other requirements of the International Building, Plumbing, and Mechanical Codes.
Approve or disapprove plans submitted, and explain and interpret requirements and restrictions.
Assist the public at the counter with the building permit application process; calculate fees and issue permits as needed; respond to inquiries regarding plan or code requirements.
Performs structural calculations to determine correct loads were used and beams, headers, pads, etc. as shown are adequate.
Conduct pre-submittal meetings with builders, engineers, contractors, and architects concerning building code and permit requirements.
Draw details for and modify submitted building plans when needed.
Prepare reports and written correspondence; research appropriate codes and their interpretation. Maintain appropriate records and files.
Coordinate plan check activities with other County departments and with outside agencies.
Coordinate with other local, state, and federal collateral agencies about site plans and improvements.

Three years of increasingly responsible experience in building structural design and/or structural plan checking.
Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Civil, Mechanical or Structural Engineering, Architecture, or a closely related field.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License.
Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year of employment, ICC certifications as Plans Examiner and Building Inspector
Possession of, or ability to obtain, ICC certifications in Plumbing, Mechanical, and Energy Conservation is highly desirable.
Other Information to Note:
An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. As marijuana is an illegal substance under federal law, testing positive for marijuana (medical or otherwise) or any other substance for which the county tests, will result in the contingent offer of employment being revoked. A successful completion of the drug screen is defined as obtaining a negative result.
