An Emergency Communications Operator receives and transmits routine and emergency telephone, radio, and computer messages and dispatches required law enforcement, fire, and/or ambulance personnel and equipment. Maintains continual radio contact with all on-duty personnel responding to calls or initiating calls.


Specifically, the position:

  • Dispatches necessary emergency personnel including law enforcement units, fire departments, ambulance departments, and other agencies as needed.
  • Sends, receives, records, and disseminates teletype information from the state and national computer; maintains NCIC/CCIC certification.
  • Reads maps and verbally describes detailed directions via radio or phone.
  • Performs Emergency Medical Dispatching for all medical calls received in the communications center.
  • Coordinates search and rescue efforts, disaster emergencies, motorized patrol units, and prisoner relays.

  • One year of experience performing duties comparable to those of an Emergency Communications Operator.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR D certification by date of hire.
  • Obtain EMD certification during training phase.

Other Information to Note:

  • An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and background check. As marijuana is an illegal substance under federal law, testing positive for marijuana (medical or otherwise) or any other substance for which the county tests, will result in the contingent offer of employment being revoked. A successful completion of the drug screen is defined as obtaining a negative result.

    • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
    • Cannot have a felony conviction

    • Pass Typing Test - 40 WPM Required
    • Pass Pre-employment Questionnaire
    • Pass written examination
    • Pass Simulated Dispatch Test
    • Pass Oral Board Interview
    • Pass an in-depth background investigation
    • Pass a polygraph examination
    • Pass a psychological evaluation and medical exam, including drug test
    • Pass a physical assessment test based on the essential job functions
