Overview of position:

This person plays a key role in providing customer service and natural resource management services to the citizens of Larimer County.

 

This position performs as a peace officer; enforces Colorado Revised Statutes and park rules and regulations; contacts violators and issues warning or citation; conducts investigations and arrests; performs a variety of professional work in providing ranger services to the public, including ranger natural resource management and interpretation, ranger and volunteer operations, enforcement of park regulations, supervision of Ranger I employees, seasonal, and assigned staff and minor maintenance tasks.

  

This position will be based at Horsetooth Reservoir.

 

This position is full time, year round, and is elibigle for benefits.

 

Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of experience providing park ranger services to the public, comparable to a Ranger I in Larimer County, including one (1) year of experience in seasonal park regulation enforcement
  • Experience in parks administration, outdoor recreation management, natural resource management in a park or outdoor recreation setting, and related parks and outdoor recreation work is preferred
  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Park Management, Wildlife Biology, Natural Resource Management, or a related field is required
  • POST Certification Level One Peace Officer required within one (1) year from hire date
  • POST Certification Level One Peace Officer preferred
  • Possession of valid First Aid Card and CPR certifications; Wilderness First Responder Certification preferred
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Driver's License

Hiring Process:

If you are selected from the applicant pool, you will continue through the steps below until a candidate is selected or the posting is closed:

  • Complete a Pre-Employment Questionnaire
  • Complete the Physical Fitness Agility Test. Requirements for the test are as follows:
    • 1.5 mile run in 15 minutes 54 seconds or less
    • 300 meter sprint in 66 seconds or less
    • Push-ups - 25 or more in one minute
    • Sit-ups - 30 or more in one minute
  • Pass an oral interview
  • Complete a Personal History Statement: This statement, along with credit report and criminal history are reviewed.
  • At this point a conditional job offer may be extended, and if so, then the following will occur:
    • Pass a psychological evaluation: All candidates for sworn positions (and other selected positions) must take a written psychological evaluation.
    • Pass a polygraph examination (Given on a scheduled basis and takes 2-3 hours ).  
    • Pass a thorough background investigation: All background investigations are performed by trained background investigators. This process takes between two and three weeks.
    • Pass a second round of interviews
    • Pass a medical exam & drug test: All candidates are required to take a medical exam and drug test at our expense. 
    • Final offer of employment: After all testing is successfully completed, a final offer for employment may be made.

Area Information:

Larimer County is located in north central Colorado.  It is the 6th largest county in Colorado based on population.  The county extends to the Continental Divide and includes several mountain communities and Rocky Mountain National Park.  Larimer County encompasses 2,640 square miles that include some of the finest irrigated farmland in the state, as well as vast stretches of scenic ranch lands, forest and high mountain peaks.  Over 50% of Larimer County is publicly owned, most of which is land within Roosevelt National Forest and Rocky Mountain National Park.  In addition to these federal lands, Colorado State Parks and Recreation and Larimer County Parks and Open Spaces combine to provide a wide spectrum of recreational opportunities that are enjoyed by both residents and visitors.

Other Information to Note:

  • This is a full time position.
  • This position is anticipated to be scheduled 40 hours per week.  Weekeend, holiday, and evening hours required.  Work schedules are subject to change depending on weather and visitation.
  • An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and background test. As marijuana is an illegal substance under federal law, testing positive for marijuana (medical or otherwise) or any other substance for which the county tests, will result in the contingent offer of employment being revoked. A successful completion of the drug screen is defined as obtaining a negative result.
