This position performs a variety of complex law enforcement, investigative, crime prevention, and related tasks in the Investigations Division of the Larimer County Sheriff's Office. It also provides highly responsible assistance to the position's assigned supervisor.
When requested by deputies or assigned by Investigations Division supervisory staff, responds to and assumes command of the scene of criminal activity.
Receives general supervision or direction from a sergeant or higher-level Supervisor.
•Exercises indirect and direct supervision over deputies, reserve deputies, civilian employees, interns, and volunteers as needed.
•Performs investigative work on assigned cases. Directs all aspect of investigative work on assigned cases including, but not limited to, the most serious and complex criminal cases.
•Conducts undercover investigations and surveillance operations as necessary.
•Assists other employees with criminal investigations.
•Answers technical questions regarding law enforcement investigations or other areas as delegated by a supervisor. Instructs patrol deputies, jail deputies, recruits, interns, and others on advanced law enforcement methods and investigative techniques.
•Participates in multi-jurisdictional task forces. May be assigned on a long-term basis to a multi-jurisdictional task force.
•Reviews and makes investigative determinations on cases; assumes responsibility in difficult and complex situations as appropriate.
•Contacts and cooperates with other agencies in matters relating to the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of offenders.
•Prepares reports, using appropriate grammar, spelling, and punctuation; of arrests made, investigations conducted, unusual incidents observed, or other documentation required as a part of assigned duties.
•Prepares affidavits for search and arrest warrants and other court orders. Executes such warrants and orders when appropriate, including the coordination and direction of personnel necessary to execute the warrant. Serves warrants, court orders, subpoenas, and civil documents.
•Identifies and manages confidential informants, including drafting contracts and evaluating their reliability and effectiveness.
•Completes and maintains records, logs, and reports including, but not limited to, the effective case management of an ongoing caseload, which includes the prioritization and effective disposition of those cases.
•Administers first aid in emergency situations.
•Maintains contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems; preserves good relationships with the general public.
•Makes arrests as necessary. Effectively and safely restrains arrestees using handcuffs and other restraints; subdues resisting arrestees by using maneuvers and/or resorting to the use of hands and feet and other approved devices in self-defense.
•Interviews victims, complainants, witnesses, including interviewing small children and other individuals who may be more difficult to interview; interrogates suspects.
•Gathers and preserves evidence in accordance with governing practices and techniques.
•Assists the District Attorney's Office during trial preparation and trials. Testifies and presents evidence in court.
•Transports arrestees for booking.
•Enforces municipal, county, state and federal laws.
•Performs searches of people and objects capable of concealing contraband or evidence.
•Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters.
•Supervises and assumes responsibility for crime scene investigation activities during case assignment and on an on-call basis.
•Coordinates evidence processing with laboratories internal to and external to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.
•Operates the CCIC/NCIC system and other law enforcement databases in order to obtain information on a subject such as a driver's license history, pawn records, parole/probation information, etc.
•When a local declaration of emergency or disaster is declared by the Board of Commissioners, all Larimer County employees may be required to work as a Disaster Service Worker.
