Assistant Director of Solid Waste

We are looking for a skilled, enthusiastic, well organized and people oriented individual to join our team of dynamic professionals in our Solid Waste Department. 

The Assistant Director assists the Solid Waste Director in administration of the Solid Waste Department, including the areas of solid waste disposal, transfer stations, recycling, construction and demolition processing, composting and hazardous waste, while serving as technical, administrative, and a management resource.

Essential Job Duties:

• Exercises direct and indirect supervision over technical, professional, and clerical staff as assigned.
• Day to day oversight of facilities operated by the Solid Waste department.
• Direct supervision of Solid Waste Managers, the Environmental Educator and contracted services operated by others for the Solid Waste department.
• Provides input on safety training and proper use of heavy machinery for staff.
• Assists in development and administration of the budget; Oversight and preparation of the landfill budget and budget implications of outside contracts
• Provides customer service support in handling questions and concerns about the landfill or other activities at our Solid Waste facilities; Provides leadership, mentoring, and guidance for Solid Waste staff members.
• Insures that our current EDOP (engineered design operation plan) is being followed.
• May assume supervisor duties for Solid Waste Director on a temporary basis and as assigned.
• Inspects, oversees, landfill maintenance and operation activities performed by maintenance personnel engaged in heavy equipment operation; Works with State compliance regulators and understands the Colorado regulations for operation of solid waste facilities.
• Inspects landfill maintenance work projects in progress and upon completion; Verifies elevations and contours to meet landfill design specifications.

 Qualifications:

• Six years of experience in a directly related field or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities.
• A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in environmental science, civil or environmental engineering, or a closely related field. The equivalent to the bachelor's degree is 6 years of directly related experience. This is in addition to the experience qualification above.
• Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License.
• Maintain continuing education hours annually or as required.
• Become SWANA certified one area (MOLO, Transfer Station, Recycling Manager, Compost, Construction and Demolition, HHW, Solid Waste Management), within one year of hire
• An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. As marijuana is an illegal substance under federal law, testing positive for marijuana (medical or otherwise) or any other substance for which the county tests, will result in the contingent offer of employment being revoked. A successful completion of the drug screen is defined as obtaining a negative result.
