The Director of Criminal Justice is responsible for a service area consisting of two county departments which include multiple programs. Utilizing a data-driven approach, the Director of Criminal Justice spearheads County planning efforts for the future of criminal justice within our community including: strategies to reduce recidivism and the jail population, collaborating with community partners to further treatment and diversion programs, facilitating advisory committees to create policy change, and auditing, researching and reporting to further develop Criminal Justice Programs within the County.
The Director is responsible for providing strategic direction, planning, supervising, and coordinating the efforts of the Community Corrections Department, Alternative Sentencing Department including the Pretrial Services Program, and Criminal Justice Planning staff. The Director fosters a collaborative relationship between County criminal justice agencies including police, corrections, and the courts. Providing fiscal guidance, the Director performs the duties of grants manager and contracting agent for the grants and contracts associated with the many criminal justice services in Larimer County.
The ideal candidate must be both technically savvy - able to locate and analyze data to recommend process or program improvements – while also possessing the consensus building skills to bring others to agreement on contentious issues.

This position’s duties include the following:
Successful candidates must have the equivalent to a Master’s degree with major coursework in Criminal Justice, Social or Behavioral Science, Public Administration, Business Administration, Political Science, or a closely related field, and 5 years of high-level management experience in the criminal justice system. Experience in the criminal justice system may be substituted for education on a year-by-year basis.

In 2003, consultants told County Commissioners that we could delay an expansion to the Larimer County jail and save taxpayer money by expanding our Alternative Programs, as well as improving and streamlining court processes. Larimer County moved forward with all of these recommendations, leading to huge cost savings to Larimer County. Through these programs, we have been able to achieve an average daily population within Larimer County Jail of 534 individuals (compared to the projected number of 729). The difference of 195 offenders, not only results in annual savings of millions, it also improves outcomes for offenders in our programs. Because Larimer County places such a value in these programs, we are currently seeking funding for the next phase of expansion for both the Alternative Sentencing and Community Corrections programs - with the intention that these projects will begin in the first quarter of 2020.

The hiring range is $113,045.00 to $169,568.00 per year; the hiring rate will depend on the qualifications of the applicant selected.
