  • Overview

    Larimer County Road and Bridge Department is seeking an Equipment Operator Master for the Laramie Grading Team.  An Equipment Operator Master operates a variety of heavy equipment and multi-axle trucks used in the repair, maintenance, and construction of native, gravel and paved roads as well as the associated structures, and appurtenances. May be assigned to any work activity at any location in Larimer County at the discretion of the Road and Bridge Director.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:   The successful applicant to the Laramie River Grading Team Master Operator position may be required, as a condition of employment, to occupy housing rented or owned by Larimer County in the Laramie River Valley. Housing is provided rent-free at the convenience of Larimer County.  If occupancy is required, the successful applicant will be required to sign a lease and provide a $1000 damage deposit, as well as complete, sign, and abide by the Larimer County Quarters Assignment Agreement and the Larimer County Quarters Occupancy/Vacancy Inspection Record.

     

     

    Specifically, an Equipment Operator Master:

    • May exercise direct and indirect supervision over field operations personnel.
    • Complies with MSHA, DOT, Colorado 811 and other applicable safety regulations and procedures.
    • Ensures project rules, procedures, applicable laws and regulations are followed.
    • Ensures all work meets departmental expectations.
    • Establishes and maintains positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
    • Operates a variety of heavy construction equipment as assigned.

    Employees in these classifications are expected to have the most experience of the Larimer County Heavy Equipment Operators.  Employees in these classifications operate the standard pieces of equipment, as shown below, satisfactorily.  They must also have the ability to be appropriately licensed and the ability to become adept in the operation of the equipment included in their specialized category.   

     

    Standard:       All vehicles requiring a Class “A” CDL and Motor Grader

    Specialized:     Asphalt Distributor, Striping Machine, Crusher.  All equipment types included in lower classified positions (Senior and Journey  Heavy Equipment Operator Series).

     QUALIFICATIONS:

    • The ideal candidate has experience in the construction, repair and maintenance of gravel and native surface roadway, maintenance, repair and work zone practices.
    • High school diploma or GED required. Each year of relevant progressively more responsible experience in the highway/street construction or maintenance field may be substituted for one (1) year of the education requirement.
    • Five (5) years of relevant progressively more responsible experience in one (1) or more of the following areas required:
      • Bridge construction and/or repair.
      • Structural concrete construction.
      • Road construction including subgrade, base course or HMA paving.
      • Pavement maintenance.
      • Earthwork construction.
      • Construction, repair and maintenance of roadside drainage systems.
      • Pipe installation.
      • Gravel and native surface roadway, maintenance, repair and work zone practices, or
      • Mining and production of aggregate.
      • Road drainage, structure construction, and/or maintenance.
      • Snow and ice control.
    • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a Colorado Class "A" CDL Driver's License with an “N”–Tanker endorsement and without “L” air brake or “NTT”–no/Trctr/Trlr restriction(s).
    • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a DOT Medical Certificate.
    • Ability to obtain a Colorado Flaggers Certification within six (6) months of employment required.
    • The above licensing requirements are a condition of employment and are fully the responsibility of the employee.

    • Near acuity, far acuity and color vision.

     

    Environmental Conditions and Physical Surroundings – Exposure - Constantly

     

    • Exposure to weather, extreme cold, extreme heat, wet and/or humid, noise, vibration, confined/restricted working environment and platform for movement.

     

    Equipment Utilized

    • Office equipment, basic hand tools, power tools and small motorized equipment, vehicles and heavy equipment.

     

    Hazards  Occasionally to Frequently to Constantly

    • Proximity to moving mechanical parts, exposure to electrical shock, working in high exposed places, exposure to radiant energy, working with explosives, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to dust, fumes, gases or airborne particles, exposure to bloodborne pathogens, and working in road ways or constructions zones.

     

    Computer Use - Occasionally

     

    Driving – Required.

     

    An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and background check. As marijuana is an illegal substance under federal law, testing positive for marijuana (medical or otherwise) or any other substance for which the county tests, will result in the contingent offer of employment being revoked. A successful completion of the drug screen is defined as obtaining a negative result.
